Supporting Theological Reflection and Conversation that Strengthen the Ministry of the Church

BOOK REVIEW:
Books Briefly Noted

The Princeton Theology 1812-1921: Scripture, Science and Theological Method from Archibald Alexander to Benjamin Warfield. Edited by Mark A. Noll. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 1983, 2001. 352 pp. ISBN: 0801067375.

This new edition of Noll’s anthology is, in large part, unchanged from its original printing in 1983, with a few inaccuracies corrected, and some new introductory material included. However, having a resource such as this available once again to the academy and church is most welcome. Judiciously selected and well-introduced, Noll provides a good overview of the concerns and approaches of these seminal figures in the American theological enterprise. This volume should be in the library of anyone interested in Reformed Theology.

Selected Shorter Writings, 2 vols. By B.B. Warfield and edited by J. E. Meeter. Phillipsburg, NJ: Presbyterian & Reformed Publishing Co., 2001. 1,278 pp. ISBN: 0875524990.

The Works of B.B. Warfield, 10 vol. Edited E.D. Warfield, Armstrong & C.W. Hodge. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker/Revell, 1932. 5104 pages. ISBN: 0801096456.

Whatever else may be said of B. B. Warfield, the remarkable durability of his work certainly deserves notice. These two reissues provide a study of a man who lived to see the dawning of the twentieth century and simultaneously rejected and embraced what it offered. Warfield was a prodigious scholar, and always enamored of modern science and its advances (he very nearly became a scientist before a surprise switch to theology).Yet, he was a decided foe of theological modernism, and fought it on every front with tenacity. Writings collects more popular, shorter pieces, and Works pieces more directed to scholarly and professional audiences. The reissue of these two sets now gives twenty-first century readers a chance to see how one person sought to reconcile old and new in the midst of war and uncertainty in another age.
